What's included in a personal 3 month health program?

Every personal health program I do starts off with a personal health evaluation and screening. This is a vital step in getting an initial understanding of your challenges, your goals and your history in achieving these goals. We will look through your past health history and your current health status and talk a lot about what your desired outcome from a person health program looks like.

Based on this evaluation, we then work together on a health program that is structured to fit your personal goals and needs, taking into consideration constraints with diet, exercise, work and other personal parameters.

Over the course of 3 months we will have a series of personal sessions, depending on your goals and your current health situation. On top of that, we will communicate each week over phone or emails to ensure you’re on track with your health goals and answer any questions your might have.

A typical 3 month program could be laid out as shown below.

Getting Started: Personal Health Questionnaire

To get things started, you will fill out a questionnaire what will focus on your goals, your health history, what you drink and eat today, your body composition.

This often also includes some homework in evaluating your own daily routine, thinking about the challenges you want help with and which goals you would like to reach.

If relevant and possible, arranging for fresh blood will also be coordinated so that we can also asses how things are “from the inside”.

We use this information to do a personal assessment which can then bed used for our first personal session (which can be in-person or online, depending on what works best).

This is the start of us setting goals together for your new healthy lifestyle.

Clients are asked to complete a questionnaire about their health, goals, diet, exercise, and supplements.

This helps me understand your needs and so we can work together to solve their personal puzzle.

Clients are asked to complete a questionnaire about their health, goals, diet, exercise, and supplements. This helps us understand their needs and work together to solve their personal puzzle.

Some of the information collected in the health questionnaire are related to parameters such as height, weight, waist measurements, body fat percentage, blood pressure, and more.

If the program you are looking for involves one or more physical challenges (e.g. weight) then  these are important  so that we can carefully evaluate the client’s initial state.

By doing so, we can effectively set achievable and realistic goals for our personalized programs tailored to each individual’s unique needs and requirements.

Our evaluation process is thorough and comprehensive, ensuring that every aspect of our client’s health and fitness is taken into consideration to maximize results. At our core, our mission is to help you become the best version of yourself possible.

A good exercise to do before we get started is to track your food and drink by logging them daily for a week.

This shows what you actually consume, not just what you think you do. It may reveal surprising insights into  your calorie intake, eating habits such as how often you eat or when you eat.

Although not always strictly necessary, when possible, I like to have recent blood test results available for the initial evaluation.

Blood tests provide unique insight into the client’s internal state, which often helps us identify necessary adjustments to diet, supplements, and medication.

Towards the end of the program, a new set of blood tests can serve as a helpful tool in evaluating whether personal goals related to adjusting specific blood markers have been achieved.

Before the blood tests are ordered from your doctor  or a private laboratory we try to coordinate which biomarkers to include so that we get the best possible data to start with.

First Session: Initial evaluation and personal conversation

The first personal session is all about really getting to know your challenges and goals, using the collected data and information as well as a detailed conversation – which usually lasts for 1-2 hours.

This will form the basis for your personalized 3 month functional health program.

Although not strictly necessary, whenever possible, I prefer to have recent blood test results available for the initial evaluation.

With all the information that you have collected for me during the Getting Started phase, I am now ready to do a personal health screening and assessment of you.

During our first session, which usually lasts between 1-2 hours, we will go through your information, your challenges and your goals so that we can decide together what you should be doing for the next 3 months.

During the first session, we  will talk about which actions you should be taking now and for the next 3 months.

These can be changes to your daily routines, diet and exercise programs, supplements, learning how to mediate or use breathwork and other relevant actions.

Included in the 3 month program are regular personal follow ups as well as regular contact by e-mail or calls where needed to follow-up and maybe make adjustments.

After 3 months, clients can continue on their own with ad-hoc check-up sessions where needed or you can choose to extend the program for another 3 months.

Regular personal follow-up sessions

During the 3 months program, we will schedule regular personal sessions to catch up on where you are an how things are going. If there is a need to make adjustments to the master plan, then we can agree on these here.

During these follow-up sessions, we will also collect new information so we can acces the ongoing progress.

Throughout the program, I am also available for e-mail and short calls if needed.

3 months - now what?

At the end of the 3 months, we will take a look together at how things have gone and if the desired goals for this time have been reached.

Before the final assessment, if relevant, it is usually a good idea to do get a fresh set of blod tests and other measurements so we can see how things have improved “from the inside” as well. Depending on the program goals, it may be too soon to get new blood work, in which case a later follow up to review this can be part of the wrap up of the initial 3 month program.

Often things have started moving in the right direction at this time and you are starting to see results from your new and healthy lifestyle. Hopefully you will find that this is the start of more long term changes.

Everyone is different and has different challenges and objectives. So often the first 3 months are just the start of a longer journey. One that you may be ready to continue on your own – or one that we continue on together.

Why Blood Work?

A crucial tool for functional health specialists

Blood work – also known as blood test – is a crucial tool for functional health specialists in their quest to understand and optimize their patients’ well-being. While some may wonder why blood tests are necessary before determining a course of action, there are several compelling reasons behind this practice.

Bloodwork provides a comprehensive snapshot of an individual’s health status. It reveals vital information about various bodily systems, including the cardiovascular, immune, endocrine, and metabolic systems. By analyzing blood samples, we can identify potential issues or imbalances that may be contributing to symptoms or underlying health concerns.

It reveals vital information about various bodily systems, including the cardiovascular, immune, endocrine, and metabolic systems. By analyzing blood samples, we can identify potential issues or imbalances that may be contributing to symptoms or underlying health concerns.
Many health conditions manifest with subtle or nonspecific symptoms initially. Blood tests can uncover underlying conditions such as thyroid disorders, vitamin deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, and metabolic abnormalities that may be contributing to a patient’s symptoms. Identifying these conditions early allows for targeted interventions and prevention of further complications.
We prioritize personalized care tailored to each individual’s unique needs. Bloodwork provides essential data for crafting individualized treatment plans. By understanding a patient’s biochemical makeup, practitioners can recommend specific dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, supplementation, or targeted therapies to address imbalances and promote optimal health.
Bloodwork serves as a baseline for tracking progress throughout the treatment process. By regularly monitoring key biomarkers, functional health specialists can assess the effectiveness of interventions and make adjustments as needed. This iterative approach allows for ongoing optimization of health outcomes and ensures that interventions are yielding desired results.
Blood tests are invaluable for preventive health screening, even in asymptomatic individuals. They can detect risk factors for chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers before symptoms manifest. Early detection enables early intervention, potentially mitigating the progression of disease and improving long-term health outcomes.
We take a holistic approach to healthcare, considering the interconnectedness of various bodily systems and addressing root causes rather than merely treating symptoms. Bloodwork provides valuable insights into how different physiological processes interact and impact overall health. This holistic understanding allows practitioners to develop comprehensive treatment strategies that address underlying imbalances and promote wellness from the inside out.

Helping Chronic Diseases

Underlying imbalances

Functional health approaches can be beneficial for managing a wide range of chronic diseases by addressing underlying imbalances, promoting overall wellness, and optimizing individual health outcomes.

Here are some common chronic diseases where functional health can make a significant difference:

  1. Type 2 Diabetes: Functional health interventions focus on improving insulin sensitivity, managing blood sugar levels, and addressing underlying metabolic imbalances through personalized nutrition plans, targeted supplementation, lifestyle modifications, stress management techniques, and regular physical activity.

  2.
  3.

Accordion Content
Functional health strategies aim to reduce cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, and inflammation through dietary changes, exercise programs, stress reduction techniques, smoking cessation support, and targeted supplementation with nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, Coenzyme Q10, and antioxidants.

Functional health approaches address autoimmune diseases by modulating immune function, reducing inflammation, and supporting tissue repair. This may involve identifying and eliminating trigger foods, addressing gut health issues, optimizing nutrient status, managing stress, and implementing anti-inflammatory diets or protocols.

Functional health specialists help individuals with digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) by identifying and addressing underlying factors such as dysbiosis, food sensitivities, gut permeability, and stress. Treatment may involve dietary modifications, probiotics, gut-healing protocols, and stress management techniques.

Functional health approaches focus on addressing underlying factors contributing to thyroid dysfunction, such as nutrient deficiencies, autoimmune reactions, hormonal imbalances, and stress. Treatment may include optimizing iodine, selenium, and zinc levels, supporting adrenal health, identifying and removing dietary triggers, and implementing lifestyle changes to support thyroid function.

Functional health specialists take a comprehensive approach to managing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME), by addressing underlying factors such as mitochondrial dysfunction, dysautonomia, immune dysregulation, and oxidative stress. Treatment may involve nutritional support, mitochondrial support supplements, pacing strategies, stress management techniques, and gentle exercise protocols tailored to individual energy levels.

Functional health interventions aim to address chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic back pain, and osteoarthritis by targeting inflammation, improving tissue repair, and modulating pain signaling pathways. Treatment may involve dietary modifications, nutritional supplements with anti-inflammatory properties, mind-body therapies, and personalized exercise programs.

Functional health approaches recognize the interconnectedness of the body and mind and address mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD by addressing underlying biochemical imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, gut-brain axis dysregulation, and lifestyle factors. Treatment may include targeted nutrient supplementation, dietary modifications, stress reduction techniques, and behavioral therapies.

Supplements

Supporting biochemical pathways

The best way to get most of the macro and micronutrients that the body needs is to eat a varied and healthy diet.

Many people often find that they are lacking in several nutrients or need to boost their intake of certain things as part of addressing issues with health or trying to reach healthy personal goals. This is where supplements can be good way to give your body what it needs in the amounts that it needs.

Supplements play a crucial role in functional health by providing targeted support to address specific nutrient deficiencies, support biochemical pathways, and optimize overall health and well-being.

Here’s are some ways supplements can help in various was from a functional health perspective.

You can see all my recommended supplements here.

Eqology Pure Arctic Oil - broad spectrum omega-3 fish oil

Many individuals have nutrient deficiencies due to poor dietary choices, malabsorption issues, or increased nutrient demands. Supplements can help replenish depleted nutrients and restore optimal levels in the body. For example, vitamin D supplements can correct deficiencies associated with low sunlight exposure, while iron supplements can address iron deficiency anemia.

Supplements can support metabolic pathways involved in energy production, detoxification, and cellular function. For instance, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supports mitochondrial function and energy production, while magnesium is essential for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, including those involved in energy metabolism and muscle function.

Certain supplements have anti-inflammatory properties and can help reduce chronic inflammation, which is implicated in various health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and autoimmune disorders. Omega-3 fatty acids, curcumin, and quercetin are examples of supplements with potent anti-inflammatory effects.

Supplements can support gut health by promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, repairing intestinal lining, and reducing inflammation in the gut. Probiotics, prebiotics, and supplements containing glutamine, zinc carnosine, and deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) can help support digestive health and alleviate symptoms of conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and leaky gut syndrome.

Hormonal imbalances can contribute to various health issues, including thyroid disorders, adrenal fatigue, and reproductive health issues. Supplements such as iodine, selenium, and zinc support thyroid function, while adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha and rhodiola can help balance cortisol levels and support adrenal health.

Supplements are commonly used to support bone health and prevent osteoporosis by providing essential nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin K2. These nutrients work synergistically to support bone mineralization, reduce fracture risk, and maintain bone density.

Certain supplements have adaptogenic properties and can help the body adapt to stress and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Supplements like L-theanine, magnesium, and vitamin B complex can support neurotransmitter balance and promote relaxation without sedation.

Supplements can support cognitive function and brain health by providing essential nutrients that support neurotransmitter synthesis, reduce oxidative stress, and enhance neuronal communication. Omega-3 fatty acids, phosphatidylserine, acetyl-L-carnitine, and alpha-lipoic acid are examples of supplements that may support cognitive function and memory.
